The New Testament places a very high estimate on John the Baptist and his ministry. John’s ministry Jesus held the ministry of John to be of the highest importance, because John .   One of the main arguments people use when taking this stance is that in the gospel of John, John the Baptist denies being Elijah. The story goes like this: Now this was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was.

Similarly, after John’s birth Zechariah describes his son in terms of Malachi 3 and 4 but never equates him with the Elijah of the OT historical books (Luke , 78). So John the Baptist was Elijah in the sense that he ministered “in the spirit and power of Elijah.” This similarity extended to John’s rustic clothing (Matt ; cf. 2.   John the Baptist could not have been the reincarnation of Elijah, for the simple reason that we know that death (or the end of one’s earthly life) results in a definitive judgment—determining whether or not we are heaven bound, as the Catechism of the Catholic Church explains here: “Death puts an end to human life as the time open to either accepting or rejecting the divine grace.

John the Baptist claimed to be this voice. The gospel writers also indicate that John the Baptist was "the messenger" who was to prepare the coming of the Lord (Matt = Mal ). That is, John the Baptist was to turn the hearts of Israel for healing in the same way as Elijah (Luke = Mal ). So there are some parallels with Elijah. In the New Testament, in the book Matthew, Jesus refers to John The Baptist as Prophet Elijah? Actually Elijah and John the Baptist are connected and linked as just one person by Jesus. See Mark 9.

John the Baptist and Elijah. In addition, John the Baptist is linked to another figure who, like Jeremiah, was linked both to Moses and to Israel’s future deliverance: Elijah.

This connection is evident in Luke 1, in which his birth is announced. 12 “From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and violent men take it by force.

13 “For all the prophets and the Law prophesied until John. 14 “And if you are willing to accept it, John himself is Elijah who was to come. 15 “He who has ears to hear, let him hear” (Matthew ).

When Jesus said that John was “Elijah,” He meant the same thing, namely, that John was to fulfill the same role in his day that Elijah had, as specified in Malachi That role, specifically, was to call the nation of Israel to repentance.

So also the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands.” 13 Then the disciples understood that He had spoken to them about John the Baptist.

Mark 9 As they were coming down from the mountain, He gave them orders not to relate to anyone what they had seen, until the Son of Man rose from the dead.

While commonly overlooked John the Baptist is the prophesied Elijah who was to come. He came years ago and by default then the great and terrible day of. Dive into the Word of God with these inspiring minute sermons from Pastor Doug at Sacramento Central Church.

The perfect program for every. Unlike the Synoptic Gospels that include many teaching parables about the Kingdom of God, John's Gospel displays Jesus' teaching in a series of discourses, many of which follow miraculous sings. If you were to number the major discourses in the Book of Signs you could come up with Seven Discourses: The New Birth ().

Concerning John the Baptist, it says in Matthew"Now John himself had a garment of camel’s hair, and a leather belt about his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey." It may be that Zecharias, who had access to the temple and things in the temple, may have acquired Elijah's camel hair garment and given it to John the Baptist to wear.

But Elijah already returned in the person of John the Baptist (Matt. They couldn’t accept this theory because John the Baptist’s simplicity couldn’t give justice to the greatness of Elijah. We too readily recognize God’s handiworks in the spectacular.

The prophetic spirit and power of Elijah rested upon John the baptist, just as it had rested upon Elisha after he saw Elijah taken up to heaven. 9When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask what I shall do for you, before I am taken from you.” And Elisha said, “I pray you, let me inherit a double share of your spirit.” (2 Kings ).

Ultimately, John the Baptist’s ministry was marked by “the spirit and power of Elijah” fulfilling the prophecy of Malachi James uses Elijah as an example of prayer in James. People came out to him to be baptized by him.

He was a weird creature. His gruff lifestyle would have reminded them of Elijah the prophet. They even asked him if he is Elijah. Although his diet may have had a little to do with it, the Pharisees and religious leaders disdained John .A. It’s true that if John had used the quote from Malachi it would have left no doubt as to his identity.

But it would have also signaled the beginning of the Great Tribulation, which is the theme of Malachi But from the way both he and Jesus spoke about his identity, it appears that John would have fulfilled the prophecy of Elijah only if the people were ready to accept Jesus as.John the Baptist is the man who prepared the way for the Messiah, preaching repentance.

Between the time John began his ministry to the time Jesus began His, there was an unprecedented religious fervour (verse 12), when men of Israel sought the kingdom of God with immense vigour (‘violence’).
